These mammoth ivory netsuke came to us from China, where the art of hand carved netsuke is being kept alive. Skilled carvers chop a block of raw mammoth ivory into smaller pieces an inch or two wide, and then hand carve and hand paint each piece.
Some of the anatomical details are so tiny, you almost need a magnifying glass just to see them, and yet they are amazingly accurate. These pieces are very nicely carved, and are, for the most part, quite naked. We only have one of each, so they are subject to prior sale.
