In 17th century Japan, when the Shogun ruled the country with their armies of Samurai, a new style of art came into being, the Ukiyo-e. These "pictures of the floating world" reflected the rise of a new middle class culture, the chonin-bunka. In contrast to the conservative morality of the ruling Shogunate, the Ukiyo-e depicted the new values of pleasure and luxury made possible by the success of the merchant class. The most erotic form of the Ukiyo-e is known as Shunga, "images of Spring." Also known as makura-e, "images under the pillow", Shunga artwork has gained an immense popularity in the West for it's stunning beauty and bold eroticism.
Netsuke Source is pleased to offer this selection of erotic Shunga prints, beautifully reproduced on luxurious Unryu rice paper. Thick and wonderfully textured, the traditional feel of Unryu makes it the perfect medium for these passionate works of art from the masters of Ukiyo-e. The prints vary in size depending on the dimensions of the original Shunga, and they are large enough to make an impressive wall display. As an example, Hokusai's popular "Dream of the Fisherman's Wife", number 05 below, measures about 22" x 15". All of these prints are available handsomely framed in a unique Ukiyo-e style, a truly magnificent way to display these fine works of erotic art. Your Shunga print will be made to order, so please allow an extra week or two for delivery.

The spirit is most often free when the body is satiated with pleasure; indeed, sometimes the stars shine more brightly seen from the gutter than from the hilltop. - W. Somerset Maugham
